Coalition presses for stronger OHV lawsNovember 1, 2005Over 30 groups from across the province opposed to the Nova Scotia government's weak OHV "Action Plan" have joined forces to push for changes. A coalition representing doctors and nurses, private landowners, small towns, hunting, fishing, wilderness and environmental groups from across Nova Scotia held a news conference at the legislature today. The Citizens for Responsible ATV Use is calling on the Conservative government to accept and implement the recommendations of the task force tabled nearly a year ago after extensive public consultation. Raymond Plourde of the Ecology Action Centre said the province is moving too slowly and is avoiding many of the most important recommendations of a provincial taskforce on Off Highway Vehicle use. "We have a message for the premier: Put the OHV issue to rest. Implement the Voluntary Planning Task Force's recommendations. This is the balanced approach," he said, adding that environmental damage was taking place on a daily basis and must be dealt with in the proposed new legislation. Both the New Democrats and the Liberals have said they will rewrite the government's proposal. They plan to make amendments to the legislation when it goes to public hearings next month. Meanwhile some in the Tory caucus are threatening to vote against their own party's legislation if there are any changes to the bill.
