NS Government tables OHV bill

November 1, 2005

Nova Scotia's Tory government has tabled Bill 275 to amend the Off Highway Vehicles Act. Disappointingly the bill does not address environmental issues related to All Terrain Vehicles and other forms of OHVs. Instead it proposes only a handful of changes designed to restrict, but not ban, youth-class ATV riders and to require written permission to use OHVs on private property not owned by the rider.

The bill falls far short of the recommendations of a provincial taskforce that spent two years investigating the issues and coming up with doable solutions.

The proposed legislation will go before the opposition-dominated Law Amendments Committee for review and public comment. Both the Liberal and NDP parties are vowing to introduce changes to the bill to bring it in line with the of the OHV Taskforce recommendations.
