Provincial government issues OHV "Action Plan"October 13, 2005Yesterday Natural Resources minister Richard Hurlburt released the provincial government's long-delayed response the Voluntary Planning Taskforce report on Off Highway Vehicles in the form of a so-called " OHV Action Plan". The plan is seen by many as a big disappointment as it delays and waters-down most the Taskforce's recommendations. The government accepted six recommendations from the taskforce, changed 31 and put two regarding licence plates on hold. "It's a very complex file," Mr. Hurlburt said during a news conference at Province House. "It just takes time to implement the regulations that we want and the legislation that we need for this file." Lauren Cardiff-MacDougall, a spokeswoman for the IWK Health Centre, was disappointed children younger than 14 will still be permitted to drive the machines. Ideally, she said, children younger than 16 should be banned from using them. Raymond Plourde of the Ecology Action Centre said government has watered down the task force's recommendations, while harm to environmentally sensitive areas continues every day. "I see a lot of delay here and very little action," said Plourde.
