Join us for Public Walks on Public Land

July 28, 2005

Ecology Action Centre and the Nova Scotia Public Lands Coalition are once again hosting our very popular "Public Walks on Public Land" hikes series in late summer and early fall. This year's hikes will include guided outings to Ship Harbour Long Lake, the Herring Cove Backlands, Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes, and Nictaux River. It's a great opportunity to get out in the woods and experience firsthand some of our province's last remaining public wildlands. Learn more about these special places, the threats they face and how you can help keep them wild forever. Dates and locations for the hikes are as follows:

Public Walks on Public Lands

Saturday, August 27 at 1:00p.m.
Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes (Suzie's Lake hike)

Meet at the Kent store parking lot, Bayer's Lake Industrial Park.

Sunday, September 17 at 1:00p.m.
Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes (Blue Mountain hike)

Meet at the Tim Horton's in the Kingswood subdivision (Hammonds Plains Road at Kingswood).

Sunday, September 25 at 10:00a.m.
Herring Cove Backlands

Meet at the Herring Cove Lookoff Parking Area, 1.5 km south (towards Herring Cove from Halifax) of the Naval Engineering School parking lot on the Purcell's Cove Road.

Sunday, October 16 at 2:00p.m.
Nictaux River (Alpena Rapids)

Meet at the Needs convenience store in Nictaux.

Everyone is welcome! Hikes generally last from 3 to 5 hours. Participants should be in reasonably good physical shape. Please bring appropriate clothing including good hiking shoes/boots, rain gear in case of inclement weather as well as drinking water and snack foods.

As well, the NS Department of Environment, Protected Areas branch is conducting their own special series of hikes into various existing Protected Areas including the province's two newest ones at Gully Lake and Eigg Mountain (see http://www.gov.ns.ca/enla/protectedareas/outings.asp).
