Five new Nature Reserves established - One Green Plan commitment honoured
December 09, 2004
Environment Minister Kerry Morash has announced the designation of four new Nature Reserves and the expansion of one existing Reserve for a total of around 1,700 hectares of conserved land. This fulfills one important commitment in the government's recently released "Green Plan" - Towards a Sustainable Environment.
The new Nature Reserves are located at Spinneys Heath, Great Barren and Quinan Lakes, and Quinns Meadow in Yarmouth County; Duncans Cove in Halifax County; and MacFarlane Woods in Inverness County.
It is important to note that the expansion of the existing Nature Reserve - the MacFarlane Woods near Mabou would not have been possible without the generous donation of private land by well known Inverness County resident, historian and landowner Jim St. Clair. This is the second time Mr. St. Clair has donated land to preserve and protect one of the last old-growth forest stands in Nova Scotia. In doing so Mr. St. Clair has set a fine example for other land owners with a love of nature to follow.
The conservation community in Nova Scotia applauds all those involved and encourages this important work to continue. In particular we look forward to seeing the designation of the promised two new Protected Wilderness Areas of Gully Lake and Eigg Mountain-James River soon in order to fulfill the second major commitment in the provincial "Green Plan".
