Highway 113 proposal neither accepted nor rejectedNovember 12, 2004Kerry Morash, Minister of Environment and Labour, has referred the Highway 113 environmental assessment application to a special focus report. What this means is that the fate of Highway 113 and the magnificent Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes ecological hotspot has been essentially put-off for up to one year. Although we welcome this last minute stay-of-execution, what's really needed is for the Minister of Environment and Labour to stand-up for this important wilderness area and to put an end to this ill-conceived highway project once and for all. The 10km long, $30 million highway proposal will pass through seven wetland areas and a stand of native red spruce forest, fragment known habitat for the endangered mainland moose, and cleave-off Halifax's highest point (Blue Mountain summit). It will also sever the popular Blue Mountain hiking trail and open-up this last piece of wilderness land near Halifax to suburban sprawl.
