Highway 113 proposal to divide Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes WildernessOctober 18, 2004The Department of Transportation and Public Works (TPW) has re-submitted a proposal to construct a 10km long highway through the heart of the Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes ecological hotspot. The purpose of Highway 113, which will connect Timberlea and Bedford, is to save eight minutes of driving time for vehicles traveling between the South Shore and Highway 102. The project is currently under environmental review by the Department of Environment and Labour. This is the fourth kick-at-the-can for TPW. Prior attempts to gain access to the magnificent Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes area, some dating as far back as the year 2000, have been turned down. When will TPW wake up and realize that the community does not want this $30 million white elephant? The Minister of Environment and Labour must decide the fate of the Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes area by November 12, 2004.
