Private Members Bill introduced to protect Blue Mountain Birch Cove LakesOctober 08, 2004Diana Whalen, Liberal MLA for Clayton Park West, has introduced a Private Members Bill seeking to protect the public lands of the Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes ecological hotspot as a protected wilderness area. The Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes area is magnificent piece of wilderness located on the outskirts of metro Halifax. It contains 22 undeveloped lakes, numerous wetland areas, old spruce, pine, and oak forests, and habitat for the endangered mainland moose. The Bill required unanimous consent by the Legislative Assembly to be immediately turned into law but, unfortunately, was voted down by a Tory MLA. All is not lost, however, as the Private Members Bill is still currently before the House. It is still awaiting second reading.

What you can do.Write the Premier of Nova Scotia and ask for Bill No. 133 to be called back for second reading. This is the next step required for the public lands of the Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes to be formally protected.
