ThreatsThe threats to Kluscap Mountain include quarrying, roads, and forestry. In the late 1980s, Kelly Rock Co. proposed a giant quarry on the mountain's west slope. Alarm over potential impacts to tourism, aesthetics, and the local fishery triggered a campaign to protect Kluscap Mountain. The most vigorous defence of the mountain came from the Mi'kmaq. They claim it is a sacred place where the prophet Kluscap once lived and will one day return. A local demonstration in 1989 led to an international campaign to save the sacred mountain. The quarry threat has died down, but only legal protection will assure Kluscap Mountain's survival. Roughly 2,500 hectares of the mountain is provincial Crown land. In 1996 the Province studied the feasibility of protecting the area and recommended protection for portions of the mountain. To date, no further progress has occured.
